Abstract:

Introduction. The article touches the problem of media education of preschool and primary school children in educational institutions in Poland.
Materials and Methods. The research is based on theoretical methods. The author analyzes the academic disciplines in which most of the learning tasks related to media education of schoolchildren (information and communication technologies, fine arts) are implemented, demonstrates the results of the study and analysis of pre-school and general education curricula that were implemented (the education program approved in 2016) and are being implemented (the program approved in 2017) in educational institutions in Poland.
Results. In the Polish system of education, media education is not a separate school subject, de-spite the fact that among the competencies, for the development of which the training is aimed, there are those that allow students to use information technologies actively, interact in the digital space, and im-prove themselves in this area throughout their lives. The reason for this is that most educational tasks are not compulsory for the implementation of media education and the formation of students’ media compe-tencies, although the use of information and communication technologies is assumed in the education of children. The article also presents the analysis of the concepts of «media education» and «media compe-tence», the types of media competence that should be formed in students.
Conclusions. The necessity of developing media competence in preschool and primary school chil-dren is shown, because from the early age children become active users of digital technologies and, there-fore, face a number of problems in media space.
