WESTERN INTERPRETATION OF A. SOLZHENITSYN’S IDEAS (ABOUT THE FILM ADAPTATION OF “ONE DAY IN THE LIFE OF IVAN DENISOVICH” NOVEL)

Abstract:

Introduction. In accordance with the comparative approach in modern literary criticism, the article focuses on the dialogue between Russian writer A. Solzhenitsyn and Finnish director Kasper Wrede. The author of the article explores the Wrede’s interpretation of Solzhenitsyn’s novel “One day in the life of Ivan Denisovich” produced in 1970.

Methodology. The methodology is based on the principles of modern comparative studies. The main methods of analysis are historical-cultural, semiotic ones.

Results. Like many Western cinematographers, Casper Wrede referring to the Russian classical litera-ture is focused mainly on the problem of spiritual transformation and new existential experience. The Finnish director explores the specificity of the prisoners’ psychology that helped them survive in the extreme condi-tions of the camp.

Conclusions. Translating a literary work to the language of another type of art can change its semantic accents significantly. Wrede’s film represents an interesting interpretation and original dialog with the ideas of Alexander Solzhenitsyn.
