Impact of structural shifts on labor productivity dynamics as a factor of
regionalization and metropolization of the US economy

Abstract: Based on theoretical principles on the development of regionalization and metropolitanization in the space
of urbanized territories and the application of the index method of empirical research, an assessment is made of the
impact of structural changes on the dynamics of labor productivity in US megaregions. The latter are considered from the
perspective of mesoeconomic analysis, focused on industry specialization, urbanization, localization, the concentration
of production and the possibility of using convergent technologies. The impact of structural changes on productivity is studied as a factor in the specific territorially localized development of metro-economies in the period 2005–2021. at two
levels – mega-regional and agglomeration. Based on the results of the study, the hypotheses put forward by the author were
generally confirmed in terms of the redistribution of economic power both in the internal space of US megaregions and
between them. Based on a comparison of the necessary indicators reflecting the structural transformation of industrial production,
affecting the overall dynamics of labor productivity and identifying the correlation between them, it is justified to identify centers of
accelerated economic growth within the US mega-regions and increase spatial unevenness at the level of mega-regional economic
development due to the further periphery of several “old” metropolises. Further peripheralization is predicted due to the beginning of
the formation of “new” metro-economies in the southeastern part of the United States, based on the development of industries with
high labor productivity. It is noted that the qualitative transformation of American industries, occurring due to the unequal growth
of sectoral labor productivity, lays the foundation for further transformations of the country’s economic space in the direction of
strengthening regionalism caused by the redistribution of economic power in the metropolitan area.
