Christmas and Easter stories
on the pages of nature and hunting magazines

Abstract: Christmas and Easter stories were very popular in Russia in the second half of the 19th – early 20th century. Works for festive dates were published by many magazines and newspapers. Specialized printing had its own peculiarities. The editors discussed environmental issues e.g.how a person treats nature during Christian holidays. The object of the study were the magazines “Nature and Hunting” (1878–1912), “Russian Hunter” (1890–1895), “Hunting Bulletin” (1901– 1918), “Dog and rifle Hunting” (1894–1907), “Volga Hunting Bulletin” (1891–1892). Those were the most popular hunting magazines in the second half of the 19th – early 20th century. Poems, short stories, sketches, “highlights”, feuilletons, “cases” were published in the issues of hunting magazines. The leading motives were transfiguration, repentance, awareness of their wrongdoing, forgiveness, supplication, punishment, and miracle. Of the key images, one can single out the image of festive nature, the image of a wonderful helper. The leading details and symbols are bell ringing, church chanting, gifts (Easter egg).Calendar holidays have become another reason to draw readers’ attention to current problems in the field of hunting and hunting economy, to remind hunters of the need for careful use of hunting resources.
