V. P. Astafyev’s narrative techniques in “The Last Bow”

Abstract: The purpose of this article is to analyze the narrative techniques used in Astafiev’s novel The Last Bow considered as a family saga. The complexity of combining various narrative techniques in this novel allows the author of this article to conduct an in-depth analysis of narrative techniques from the point of view of both modern and postmodern literary criticism. Based on the research methods proposed by Philippe Lejeune, M. M. Bakhtin, M. H. Abrams, Lawrence Edward Bowling, Kara Batema, Linda Klieger Stillman and others, as well as on the content analysis of The Last Bow, the article shows that Astafiev’s narrative techniques allow him to present the life of the narrator as the hero of a family sagain a vivid and convincing way.

Keywords: narrator, autobiography, settings, stream of consciousness, symbolism, family saga.
