Dostoevsky’s symbolic and spatial motifs as a means of philosophical
synthesis in Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel ‘‘The White Guard”

Abstract: The article analyzes symbols and space in Dostoevsky’s motifs in Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel “The White Guard”. The methods of philosophizing are dreams, time games. The author comes to the conclusion that M. A. Bulgakov in the “White Guard” with the help of associative links with symbolic motives and plot situations being typical of F. M. Dostoevsky, creates a new style of philosophical experiment, explores the infinity of the human spirit and the movement of history. The use of symbolic oppositions of the quick and the dead, light and darkness, paradise and hell, heaven and earth allows us to explore infinity by expanding the perspective of the human worldview. This philosophical experiment in the spirit of Dostoevsky’s poetics gives Bulgakov the opportunity to approach the mystery of the universe and overcome the murderous chaos of the revolution.
