Introduction. The article contains the newspaper phenomenon in I. A. Goncharov’s novel “Oblomov”. It determines its iconic nature, the specifics of the newspaper story, the genesis of reading plots or refusing to read newspaper news. The purpose of the study is to comprehend the newspaper as a semioticnarrative phenomenon in I. A. Goncharov’s novel “Oblomov”.
Materials and Methods. The methodological basis of our study are semiotic and narrative analyzes. We consider the newspaper as a semiotic element of the Petersburg’s text of the Russian culture, as an element of a narrative construction, the development of which testifies to the attitude of the characters to the news material.
Results. The study determines the need to include the newspaper in the semiotic complex of the Petersburg’s text, along with a magazine and a book. The novel by I. A. Goncharov “Oblomov” becomes a work that allows us to trace the dynamics of the attitude to the newspaper, to establish the ambivalent semantics of this phenomenon. The specifics of the narrative fragments concerning the relationship of characters to news text, shows that the Oblomov’s reluctance follow the information due to his pedigree – idyllically calm, uneventful world of the estate.
Conclusions. Semiotics of the newspaper is an important element of the St. Petersburg’s text; the newspaper is associated with the values of novelty, the dynamics of life. Alien to St. Petersburg culture, Oblomov does not read newspapers; his dislike of the news comes from an idyllic manor. He expresses his skepticism about the newspaper in accusatory statements. The phenomenon of the newspaper in Goncharov’s novel gets ambivalent assessment: it has both positive aspects (openness of the St. Petersburg culture to the world) and negative ones (according to Oblomov, reading newspapers leads to the abandonment of the House).
