Abstract:

Introduction. The article concentrates on the study of the axiological potential of a familiar colloquial lexeme kid, determined by its stylistic marking and subframes of clusters of the conceptual-cognitive frame “child”, with the functioning of the word in the British newspaper The Guardian.
Materials and Methods. The article uses the conceptual analysis, the analysis of vocabulary definitions, the contextual analysis, the method of quantitative processing of the material. The sample size is 876 contexts.
Results. The main cases of the realization of the word’s axiological potential under investigation are destinguished: the creation of the positive evaluation with the actualization of meliorative connotative meanings; the creation of the negative one – with the actualization of pejorative connotations and with the actualization of positively estimated connotations. The article considers the mechanism of creating axiological
contextual evaluation. With this purpose, five clusters were identified in the structure of the conceptualcognitive frame “child”, which determine the axiological potential of the spoken word kid. The analysis of media contexts allows us to identify three main areas, the coverage of which is most often associated with the estimated contextual functioning of this lexeme.
Conclusions. The study of adherent-evaluative vocabulary functioning in the text of the British newspaper “The Guardian” provides an opportunity for a more detailed analysis of the characteristics of the media discourse language.
