Abstract:

Nikolay Kolyada plays as an important role in the contemporary Russian drama field. He is recognized as the linchpin in Russian drama during late 1980s and early 1990s. Kolyada uses natural dialogues as the basic form of the drama language; he outlines life through his own unique vision unveiling the ugly and dark gutter of society, represents the realistic and seamy side of a human personality and does it in his overly naturalistic style. The article discusses the subjects, characters, language and ideology of Kolyada’s works from neo-naturalist perspective and explores the origins of contemporary Russian neo-naturalist drama greatly influencing the contemporary Russian dramatic art.
