Abstract:

The aim of the present article is to thoroughly analyze the phenomenon of visual literacy which is undoubtedly a new trend in modern EFL instruction. Such trend is determined by the deep penetration of information-communication technologies into the process of EFL instruction, which allows for increasing the rate of visuals integration into any lesson at any stage of instruction. Moreover, picture description and comparison is an obligatory task of the speaking part of the Russian State Exam in foreign languages. The article gradually considers the impact of visual thinking advancement on the expansion of the notion of communicative competence, its enrichment with new modalities, like visual literacy. Further the author dwells upon the desirability of developing visual literacy skills with the new generation of learners known as digital aborigens. The paper rounds off with the analyses of the algorithm of developing visual literacy skills which inlolves the data of some modern American internet projects. The timeliness of this analysis is proven by the fact that practical development of such skills is still a new area in post-soviet ELT. The paper might be of some interest for FL school teachers and university instructors as well as any teacher involved in international standardized language testing instruction.
