Abstract:

The paper dwells on the linguistic representations of the opposed enemy and defender images exem-plified by the data covering the conflict in the Eastern Ukraine. The author explores the materials of the In-ternet resource “UNIAN” from February 2016 to May 2016. The focus is made on revealing the lexical means used to form a negative image of the conflict opposing party, so called “foes”, and a positive image of “friends”.
Ukrainian mass media distinctly outline the opposition of enemy and defender images. The opposition under study is an implemented ancient binary opposition “friend//foe”. The image of the defender is built through naming units and predicates representing meanings of ‘law’, ‘good’ in contrast to the opposing par-ty, that is the enemy. The linguistic representation of the image of the enemy is provided by a larger amount of linguistic units and, thus, the adversary appears as a strong force violating the established rules and using weapon, which causes deaths of military men and civilians.
