Abstract:
The article is rather relevant as it is the empiric work that had been carried out for two years. The aim of the research is to investigate how modern Anglicisms from the field of Internet could be assimilated in some Europe-an languages (4 language groups), to determine the gender assignment criteria, and to describe the reasons of determination. According to this, the tasks are to analyze the surveys of almost a hundred of European respond-ents, mostly students at the average age of twenty two. They were offered to assign the gender to three nouns – Instagram, selfie, and hashtag. The originality of the work is to choose different languages, including those with two or three gender categories, or even without anyone, and to study the difficulties of gender determination crite-ria from inside the national languages, as in many of them aforementioned vocabulary is not even fixed in diction-aries. The methods used in the research are statistical, comparative, and the method of social and linguistic corre-lation. The results allow for the conclusion that the respondents face particular difficulties while assigning the gender, as in some native languages there are no strict rules to determine Anglicisms’ gender, or there is a lack of gender itself, for example, in Hungarian language. By all means the results are quite valuable, and could be im-plemented at University, among Russian and foreign languages teachers and students.
