Abstract:

Introduction. Studies examining the process of establishing and maintaining sobriety, rather than «combating alcoholism» are extremely scarce. This is evidenced by the fact that in everyday life, in conventional terminology, there is no definition of the main concept, the concept of “sobriety”. The purpose of the article is to analyze the existing definitions of the concept of “sobriety” and to offer a more accurate definition of sobriety for introduction into the scientific conceptual apparatus.
Materials and Methods. The study was based on the use of the general philosophical dialectical method. The method of study and theoretical analysis of the legal framework has revealed contradictions in the use of definitions. The comparative method helped to identify the common and differences in the interpretation of the term “sobriety” used in the science of sobriety.
Results. The authors justify the need for a clear definition of the concept “sobriety” for confirmation and preservation of sobriety in society.
Conclusions. The authors propose the definition of the concept “sobriety”, which is more exact: it excludes polysemy. That is why to confirm and preserve sobriety in society, it is necessary to introduce that particular definition into scientific use.
