MODERN FRENCH ONOMASTICON AND ISSUES  OF  ITS  ADAPTATION IN THE RUSSIAN LANGUAGE

Introduction. The article attempts to consider the modern French onomasticon in a number of aspects. Our purpose is to comprehensively study the modern French onomasticon and highlight the main issues of its adaptation in the Russian language.

Methods and methodology. The study was conducted using linguistic and extralinguistic analysis of the collected factual material in synchrony and diachrony.

Results and conclusions. The conclusion is made about the heterogeneity of the modern French onomasticon that is the result of a number of factors, the main of which are: the involvement of a number of territories that were not originally French-speaking, the formation and disintegration of the French colonial empire, intensive migration flows in the sphere of influence of the French language. A feature of the French onomastic area is the fact that the allogeneous proper names integrated by it are considered French. In addi- tion, modern French onomastic area is constantly replenished with new anthroponyms. These features of the modern French onomastic area should be taken into account when adapting French names in Russian. At the same time one should take into consideration the role of adaptation traditions. It is suggested to subdivide the adaptation of French proper names into professional adaptation and spontaneous adaptation. The obstacle to an adequate transfer of French proper names in the Russian language to a certain extent is a significant de- crease in the number of people in the Russian Federation who speak French.

Keywords: language, French, names.
