Poetics of philosophical prose and moral and philosophical searches
in N. V. Gogol’s book “Selected passages from correspondence with friends”

Abstract: The study of N. V. Gogol’s literary heritage is impossible without understanding his religious and philosophical teachings and thereby understanding the poetics of these works and, in particular, “Selected passages from correspondence with friends”. There has been a discussion in literary thought for a long time, mainly on the question of assessing the significance of this work. It cannot be denied that for literary critics Gogol is primarily an artist; the critical, spiritual, moral, scientific works of the writer have not been comprehensively studied yet and they are not in the focus of research scope. By the will of fate, Gogol was at the forefront of a specific form in Russian literature i.e. philosophical one. “Selected passages…” can be qualified as an artistic philosophy. The author’s thought becomes the subject and means of artistic representation, an internal shape-generating principle. “Selected passages…” represent the first experience of creating a synthesis of philosophical criticism and fictionin the Russian literary;it has incorporated aesthetic, artistic, philosophical and theological principles into a single integrity. This book is truly synthetic; Gogol appears in it as an Orthodox thinker calling for the transformation of a man in Orthodox truth and thereby for the revival of national consciousness and social life.
