Economic metaphors with the key tokens ‘price’ and ‘market’ in modern Russian media texts

Abstract: The article deals with the issues of metaphorical modeling in the media discourse regarding economic topics. It has been found that economics and language have an unbreakable bond. We discovered that the functionality of economic metaphors in media texts lies in the linguistic objectification of realities in the economic sphere. The functionality also lies in the assessment of economic events and the ability to influence the recipient. A metaphor in a certain type of discourse performs a set of functions that is determined by the purpose and objectives, values, the composition of participants, the place and time of communication. We found the most productive models of metaphors that represent such concepts of economics as price and market. The cognitive-discursive analysis for metaphorical nominations of target spheres such as ‘price’ and ‘market’ allowed us to identify a number of metaphors being the ‘key’ ones for modern media texts in economic issues. Metaphors of growth, takeoff, upsurge and downturn can be considered as ‘key’ metaphors with the target sphere ‘price’. Metaphors with the source sphere ‘person’ will be the ‘key’ ones for the target sphere ‘market’. The research material can be used in further study of the metaphorical modeling theory in the aspect of national view of the economic world, in the systematic study of ways to influence public consciousness through media texts, as well as in the study of the metaphorical modeling laws in other discourses.
