Mass media operation in the conditions of political conflicts

Abstract: The resolution of political conflicts is associated with the implementation of actions aimed at eliminating sources of competitive interactions and meeting the needs and interests of subjects. To implement these measures, the actions of mass media are important; they serve as a barometer reflecting critical or favorable changes in political weather affecting the sides of an unresolved conflict. The author of the article considers the coverage by mass media, which are issued in the territories controlled by the subjects of competitive interactions, those political conflicts that remain unresolved in the post-Soviet space in 2020–2021 (Transnistria, Nagorno-Karabakh). Mass media can contribute to both exacerbation and mitigation of the relationship between the conflict subjects, consider competitive interactions from different angles: either one side is contrasted with the other, “wrong”, violating any norms, rules, laws, or audience is offered neutral coverage of the relationships of subjects of conflict, or journalists are willing to play a constructive role in reconciling the parties, showing the need to respect human rights, laws, international conventions and declarations, participation in negotiations. The dynamics of coverage by the mass media of political conflicts is reflected in the fact that in the context of the continuation or renewal of negotiations there is increasing amount of materials on the search for a compromise, the need to implement the agreements reached, satisfy the interests of the parties of interactions. The mechanisms for preserving the integrity of the subsystems of materials of the mass media on the relationship between the parties of political conflicts are different. Reports by some mass media on political events coordinate the content and quantity of materials on the economic and cultural relations of the subjects of competitive quantity interactions. Thematic diversity, a combination of information and analytical journalistic works about the interaction of the parties of unresolved conflicts in various fields of life of the State and the region ensure the integrity of the subsystems of the materials of other mass media.
