Typology of Bible quotes in Chekhov’s prose

Abstract. The article is devoted to the problem of forming a typology of Bible quotes in the prose of A. Chekhov. The classification division is based on the unique potential ability of a “biblical word” to be in the focus of the author’s text links both along the “text – the Bible” line, and along the “text – non-artistic reality” line, to organize multilayer dialogical connections. The lexemes, word combinations, phrases, concepts, images ascending to the Holy Scripture received such being totally “mastered” by the language and discourses, more broadly – by culture. The writer got an opportunity to mix different linguistic and ideological worlds i.e. the world of the Bible and its cultural modifications, and to play with the homonymy of their lexical units in his works; A. Chekhov made an extensive use of such opportunities. On the basis of the dominant dialogical line, there are three main types of Bible quotes: object, discourse and text centered ones. The quotations types within the groups are characterized by specific dialogical overtones. The classification gives guidelines for the analysis of the writer’s attitude to the Bible, for the way it is quoted and interpreted, for the forms of religiosity: for each subject of analysis there is a corresponding type of borrowing. The presented typology can be projected onto the work of other prose writers.

Keywords: A. Chekhov, the Bible, typology of quotations, prose, system approach, dialogical dominant of Bible quotes, text, discourse, non-artistic reality.
