Classification of hypotheses for pedagogical research

Abstract. In recent years, the scientific community is increasingly paying attention to the quality of scientific research improvement. One of the “weak” points in research is a hypothesis. The need to formulate it is a requirement for pedagogical research. However, we did not find any works giving an idea of the pedagogical hypotheses classifications. This leads to the following errors of hypothesizing: triviality and self-evidence, substitution with well-known facts. At the same time, designing a hypothesis is a complex and multi-stage process requiring knowledge of hypotheses classifications and types. Therefore, the aim of the study was to classify the hypotheses for pedagogical research. The hypothesis definitions are given provisionally, they are characteristic for pedagogical science. The aspects that must be taken into account when proposing a hypothesis are highlighted. The conditions for the hypothesis are indicated. The advantages and disadvantages of the hypotheses are indicated. Sixteen classifications of hypotheses of pedagogical research are described; their types and subspecies are given. Among them there are well-known and author’s classifications, as well as classifications presented in Internet sources. The debatable aspect is the presentation of the hypotheses classification being specific for sociology, and it is recommended by the author to be used in pedagogical science based on the “variables being analyzed” criterion. Overall results of the study are presented in tabular form; it allows to perceive the classification more clearly. At the end of the main part, the most common mistakes in hypothesizing are given. The criteria by which the hypotheses have been classified are given. The definition of the concept ” hypothesizing ” is given. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the successful implementation of this procedure are highlighted. The erroneous and successful methods of hypothesis formulation are highlighted. In conclusion, a further research perspective is built; it is associated with the need to illustrate classifications with examples of wording for each type of hypothesis.
