Communicative skills: graduates self-assessment and reflexion

Abstract:

The problem of communication skills formation for future doctors is one of the most urgent in Russian medical education at the present stage. Self-assessment of the formation of communication skills allows not only to assess the learning outcomes, but also to determine the directions for improving the training program, to build individual trajectories for the development of communication skills. The aim of the study was to analyze the self-assessment of the graduates communication skills before and after the study of the “Communication skills” elective course to improve the content and the way future doctors are taught to communicate with patients. The article discloses the method and results of self-assessment of the formation of the communication skills of graduates. On the basis of the questionnaire, self-assessment of 7 groups of communicative skills of future doctors was studied: “start of admission”, “collection of information”, “structuring of consultation”, “creation of relationships”, “explanation and planning”, “completion of admission”, “conditions for clarification and planning”. The results of the study showed that before the study of the elective “Communication skills” at the intermediate level, the graduates had the skills to establish initial contact, the rest of the communication skills corresponded to a low level. After training the group of communication skills “gathering information», “structuring a consultation», “creating relationships», “explaining and planning”, “completing an appointment”, “conditions for clarification and planning” reached an average level, the skills of establishing initial contact – a high level. In addition, the results of the self-assessment can be used to improve “Communication skills” elective program.
