Pedagogical design as an essential factor of MOOCs successfulness

Abstract:

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are becoming increasingly popular in the educational environment. In addition to their advantages, the problem of completing these courses is increasingly identified in the scientific literature. The fact that a relatively small percentage (10%) of participants who complete their studies with a certificate suggests that the pedagogical design of these courses may be important in terms of the effectiveness of the MOOCs. This study analyses the impact of MOOC pedagogical design components, such as its structure, ability to interact and evaluate the quality of learning by students, on their successful completion. The methodological basis for the study is a system and a personal-activity approaches. Theoretical and empirical methods are used to solve the stated problems.
In the research 56 students of Reshetnev Siberian State University of Science and Technology, out of 193 people assigned for the course, successfully completed the massive open online course “English for Successful Careers”. Their feedback is analysed to work out efficient strategies of working out a successful pedagogical design of MOOCs.
The obtained data confirmed the hypothesis that the pedagogical design of the course, developed in accordance with didactic principles of teaching, contributes to more effective learning of the participants of the educational material, creation a sense of satisfaction from self-training and successful completion of the courses.
The research highlighted the perspective issues of further studies, such as possibilities to build individual learning strategies, which contribute to motivation of participants and successful completion of massive open online courses. The findings suggest that while content may be a starting point for attracting potential MOOC participants, pedagogical design is a cornerstone for keeping students on courses and a factor in ensuring learning success.
