Abstract:

The novel “Small world” is an example of intellectual prose which includes a large amount of allusions. This article presents examples of references of the novel to the works of world classical literature. Primarily the novel is based on Celtic legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table which allows the author to furnish the structural principle of “Small world”. Allusions in Lodge’s novel create a wide level of intertextuality, organize categories of irony, parody, and game between the author and the reader. All this leads to the conclusion that Lodge in writing his novel was based on the principles of postmodern writing.

Keywords:

Allusions, intertextuality, irony, the legend of King Arthur, the Holy Grail, postmodernism.
