Abstract:

Problem. The article examines the problem of the literary hero image in the English literature on the example of the philosophical novel “The Door in the Wall” by Herbert George Wells. Creating the image of the character is a difficult task for a writer as it’s necessary not only to endue the hero with certain character features, to reveal his thoughts and feelings and intrigue a reader, but also to use the specific expressive means of a language in the text to attain these aims. Since the research analyzes the work of an English writ-er, the translation strategies of linguostylistic devices from the English language into Russian play a major role in depicting the image of the main hero to Russian readers. The main task of the translator is to convey the meaning of the English text to Russian readers, while keeping its distinctive character.

Purpose of the research. Influence of the expressive language means and the ways of their translation from English into Russian on the process of constructing the image of the main hero in perception of Russian readers represents a great interest both from linguistic and literary points of view. It defined the purpose of the research: to create the image of the main hero Lionel Wallace in the novel “The Door in the Wall” by H. G. Wells, by identifying the expressive language means Herbert Wells used to create this image, as well as to specify the ways of their translation into Russian by M. Mikhailovskaya.

Materials and Methods. The analysis of scientific literature on the topic, the continuous sampling method, the comparative analysis of the original text of the novel “The Door in the Wall” and its Russian translation by M. Mikhailovskaya were used in the research.

Results. The article introduces the concepts of “literary hero”, “literary character”, “hero image”, “character portrait”, “expressive means of a language”. It also analyses types of character portraits and the difference between two terms “literary hero” and “character”.
The author underlines that six techniques, or means, of constructing the image of Lionel Wallace were used in the novel. They are: portrait and voice characteristics of the main hero; environment and society the main hero lives in; feelings and emotions of the main hero connected with the door in the wall; description of the main hero by the other character (schoolfellow); attitude of the main hero to himself; linguostylistic devices. The major means of creation of the image of Lionel Wallace are the expressive language means; the most used are lexical and syntactic stylistic devices. The lexical stylistic devices are epithets and similes, the syntactic sty-listic devices are various kinds of repetitions such as anadiplosis, anaphora, framing, polysyndeton; syntactic parallelism; aposiopesis; exclamations. Linguostylistic devices are specific for each method of the main hero creation, shaping the image of the hero not directly, but via Redmond’s, schoolfellow, memories.
When working on the comparison of the original text of the novel and the Russian translation by M. Mikhailovskaya, the next ways of expressive language means translation were identified: literal translation; grammatical replacement; omission; explication; rearrangement; sentence fragmentation; sentence unification.

Conclusions. The image of the main hero is shaped with the help of lexical and syntactic stylistic de-vices that are revealed in means of “feelings and emotions of the main hero connected with the door in the wall”. Epithets, various repetitions, similes, aposiopesis, exclamations, used by the writer, highlight the pe-culiarities of Lionel Wallace’s character, shaping the whole image–the image of the man who achieved an unbelievable success in his career, but didn’t do anything to make his dream come true. Among other im-portant techniques of the hero image creation are the portrait characteristics, environment and society the main hero lives in. Through these techniques, a reader penetrates more deeply into the inner world and feel-ings of Lionel Wallace, giving him the specific character features. In all cases of translation of the linguostylistic means, which create the main hero image, the transla-tor M. Mikhailovskaya preserves their language expressiveness, excluding the repetitions where she offers their unique interpretation in Russian. The ways of translation of the language means of expressiveness from English into Russian used by her are high-quality devices of the hero image creation of the main hero in the novel “The Door in the Wall”, which help Russian- speaking readers to learn the details of main hero’s per-sonality and to follow the dynamics of his attitude to his dream within his life.
