THE COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF ANTONYMY, COMPLEMENTARITY AND CONVERSENESS AS SEMANTIC RELATIONS (EXAMPLIFIED BY WORKS OF ENGLISH AND AMERICAN WRITERS)

Abstract:

Introduction. The article deals with studying the problem of linguistic oppositeness that remains one of the current lexicological issues. The main purpose of this research work is proving the fact that there are three types of semantic relations based on the notion of oppositeness. They are antonymy, complementarity and converseness.

Methodology. The study is conducted on the basis of a comparative method, as well as methods of contextual analysis and analysis of dictionary definitions. The research material was taken from the works of English and American writers.

Results and conclusions The study revealed the distinctive features of antonymy, complementarity and converseness. It is concluded that: 1) the denotative meanings of antonyms carry opposite concepts, while the denotative meanings of complimentory words carry contradictory concepts; 2) antonyms are often monovalent or non-valent while converses are always at least divalent.
