Abstract:

Introduction. The purpose of this study is to determine whether modern students know the meaning of the words presented in the Russian Dictionary of Language Expansion (compiled by A.I. Solzhenitsyn), and whether these words are in the active / passive part of their vocabulary; to identify the attitude of the partici-pants in the psycholinguistic experiment to A. I. Solzhenitsyn’s lexicographic work and their assessment of the level of «withering away» of the language material of the dictionary and the possibility of imparting a «refreshed meaning» to obsolete Russian words.

Methods and methodology. The main research method is a psycholinguistic experiment on the com-pilation of the dictionary definition of the analyzed word (semantic experiment). Subjects – bachelor and master students of the Faculty of Philology and Media Communications of Dostoevsky Omsk State Universi-ty. The sample size was 50. The stimulus list was formed on the material of the studied dictionary using a random number sensor and included 20 lexical units. All words included in the stimulatory list have dialectic and common language basis and varying degrees of obsolescence.

Results. The results of the experiment recorded the processes occurring in the semantics of dialect-colloquial words presented in the «Russian Dictionary of Language Expansion»; deepen the understanding of the strategies of interpretation of obsolete and non-codified words by native speakers.

Conclusions. The studied dictionary has passed the test of time: semantic fields built on the material of the experiment carried out are important for lexicographical practice; Dictionary materials are of interest to «young people with a strong thirst for the freshness of their native language» [2].
