of speech on the basis of English praseological units
(on the example of the English language)

Abstract: The article presents in detail the expressiveness of speech on the basis of English praseological units. A purposeful and systematic English idiom teaching isn’t included in the process of teaching the English language in non-linguistic universities. The methodology, according to which high-quality teaching of English phraseological units can be carried out, remains undeveloped. That’s why the urgency of this research is determined by the disadvantages of the existing way of learning English phraseological units. Developing the technique to teach the expressiveness of speech on the basis of English idioms for students of non-linguistic universities causes a great interest, as it makes it possible to look at the process of English phraseology teaching from an unusual angle. The research represents the analysis and synthesis of scientific and methodical literature on the topic, the survey of first-year students, and quantitative evaluation of obtained results of the survey. The article presents in detail the expressiveness of speech, emotionlessness, evaluation, figurativeness, kinds of phraseologisms, and expressiveness. The author also considers the concept “phraseological unit”; properties of phraseological units; classification of phraseological units; the main translation modes from English into Russian; results of the survey of first-year students with the aim to reveal knowledge of English idioms; the methodology for teaching English idioms to students of non-linguistic universities; online resources for individual work with English phraseology. The results of the survey showed that students of non-linguistic universities have superficial knowledge about English idiomshaving an idea only about the most common proverbs and sayings(the ones existing in the Russian language), where the words are used in their literal logical meanings. The developed methodology has the aim to fill knowledge gaps about English phraseological units, teach students to translate English idiomscorrectly, and use them in their everyday speech.
