Poetics of the portrait in the late lyrics by M. Yu. Lermontov

Abstract: The work is devoted to the study of the basic principles of creating a portrait in the late lyrics by M. Yu. Lermontov 1837–1841 in the context of his art evolution, artistic anthropology, combination of romanticism and realism features. The purpose of the article is to reveal the artistic originality of the Russian poet. The study is carried out on the basis of historical- literary, cultural-historical methods. The results consist in revealing Lermontov’s innovation in creation of laconic lyrical portraits revealing spiritual dynamics and individual characteristics. The artistic details of the portrait make it possible to clarify both the spiritual originality of the personality and the author’s assessments. The author of the article analyzes various types of lyrical portraits and their figurative dominants. The laconic portrait characteristics in Lermontov’s lyrics are quite diverse: a portrait- epithet, a portrait-comparison, a portrait-metaphor, a portrait-antithesis. It is concluded that the portraits in Lermontov’s late lyrics are freed from romantic conventions and seek to reveal specific personality traits. The portrait within the lyrical text, with all its conciseness, reveals through a system of artistic details the spiritual depths of the personality, its metaphysical foundations. At the same time, the portrait detail becomes polyphonic, psychologically revealing not only the spiritually mobile world of the individual, but also the features of the author’s worldview, author’s assessments, especially dynamism and contrast. Laconic lyrical portraits are created not only through epithets, incl. coloristic ones, metaphors, comparisons, antitheses, but also with the help of verb forms. In Lermontov’s lyrics, portrait and landscape organically interact.
