Technical terminology in science fiction (on the example of “The door into summer” by R. A. Heinlein)
Abstract. TThe article examines the problem of classification and translation of the technical terms in American science fiction on the example of “The Door Into Summer” by Robert A. Heinlein. The research represents the analysis and synthesis of theoretic information on the topic, the method of continuous sampling and quantitative calculation, the comparative analysis of the technical terms in the novel of the American writer R. A. Heinlein “The Door Into Summer” and the Russian translation of the novel performed by L. M. Abramov. All terms found in the novel by R. A. Heinlein refer to such sciences as mechanics, electronics, electric engineering and robotics. The main ways of term formation are suffixation, word composition, conversion, reduction. All terms found in the novel are divided into term-words and term- combinations. The term combinations represent the biggest group of technical terms in the novel; they consist of two types: two-component and compound terms. The novel also contains general scientific terms and the terms, referring to the same terminology system though these terms have different meanings. Comparing the translation of English and Russian terms, the following ways of translation can be mentioned: transcription, calquing, translation with the genitive case, translation with the changing of the component order of the attributive group, grammatical substitution, and descriptive translation. All technical terms of the novel are the part of various stylistic devices such as comparison, ellipsis, exclamation and detachment. Inclusion of the terms into the stylistic devices structure contributes to the convergence of the scientific and the belles-lettres styles on the modern level of the language development.
