Legends of the Sacred country in Nicholas Roerich’ literary works

Abstract. The literary legacy of Nicholas Roerich is extensive and at the same time hasn’t been studied sufficiently yet. The genre attribution of his literary works imposes certain challenges. The article introduces the specifics of N. Roerich’s non-fiction texts, examines the motif of the legendary “Sacred Country” or “Shambhala” (based on his works as “Altai- Himalayas”, “Heart of Asia” and “The Himalayas – abode of Light”). This motif was one of the main in his literary work. The article accentuates the importance of legends and tales of different cultural traditions for his artistic world. Roerich’s motif of Shambhala, as a rule, is related to a person’s spiritual development.
