Abstract:

Introduction. The article is devoted to the study of the phenomenon of ethnic identity, representing the field of scientific interests of a number of humanities, revealed in the works of Russian and foreign sci-entists. This scientific article makes it possible to: identify and reveal scientific trends in studying the prob-lem of ethnic identity as “a form of social identity embodied in the cultural tradition and focused on the her-itage of the past in comparison with other forms, in turn, oriented towards the present or the future”; define approaches to the identity of the concepts of ethnic identity and ethnic self-consciousness; characterize the variability and diversity of the psychological links of ethnic identity – age, gender, confessional, ecological, civil, professional, ethnic; expand the components of ethnic identity; identify options for the development of ethnic identification and the mechanisms of its development.

Methodology. The authors use a retrospective analysis of scientific literature as a method of review. The work is based on general scientific research methods and principles of psychological science: objectivi-ty, reliability, critical approach to sources, analysis and synthesis of scientific literature.

Conclusions. It is concluded that ethnic identity is a major component of the structure of self-consciousness, being the most important product and process of understanding ethnicity. Ethnic identity is a dynamic entity, the formation of which is influenced by the social context. Internal factors of ethnic identity are characterized by awareness and the presence of a reflexive level of self-consciousness.

The theoretical results, as well as the conclusions of this study based on them, can be used to further study the phenomenon of “ethnic identity”; to become the basis of interdisciplinary research.
The study reveals a number of problems, the solution of which should be continued. In particular, it is the need for further research: the development and testing of the author’s methodology for studying the characteristics and patterns of the ethnic identity of the person; the gradual expansion of the implementation base of research results and their longitudinal verification, which aims to elaborate and specify a model for the development of a person’s ethnic self-identity, to develop research methods for the transformation of ethnic self-consciousness.
