COLOR LEXEMES AS A MEANS OF COMPARATIVE SEMANTICS EXPRESSING

Introduction. This article analyzes the possibility of expressing comparative semantics by units of the lexical level of a language – color lexemes (colorisms). Purpose. Identify the conditions and features of the functioning of colorisms as a means of expressing the comparative semantics.

Methods and methodology. The methodology for studying the comparative potential of colorisms is based on the provisions of functional grammar. The main research methods are the method of monosystem, polysystem and component analysis.

Results. Among the colorisms, there are two types of color lexemes: basic and tint. It is determined that basic colorisms are capable of expressing comparative semantics only under certain external conditions, while the tonal lexemes have wider possibilities for functioning as comparative means. Separately, the ques- tion of the expression of the comparative semantics of color lexemes that call shades of colors or the state of “color transition” is considered. The structural-semantic type of comparative constructions containing colorisms is determined. The possibility of colorism to express comparative semantics is revealed, forming semantic oppositions within the framework of a single utterance.

Analysis of the comparative potential of colorisms is carried out on the material of works of Russian classical literature of the XIX–XX centuries.

Conclusions. The study confirmed the possibility of expressing the comparative semantics of color lexemes.

Keywords: comparison, comparative, comparative semantics, lexical level of language, color lexemes, colorisms.
